I offer a UNIQUE service, developed over 30 years. My background is a B.Sc. in Computer Science and financial systems. I know business. I know the net.
You have a web site. You've paid major firms thousands of dollars to help promote your web site. You continue to pay monthly or yearly fees. And yet, you aren't getting the results you like. Why? For the same reason that companies take out telephone adverts in each of BellSouth, AT&T, Dex and service directories (both hard copy and on the net). It is called "saturation". It takes TIME and EFFORT. And it entails posting your COMPANY NAME in multiple obscure (and popular) web sites both locally and nationally. This is not the same as cross linking or posting to search engines. Why am I only charging such a low discount rate? Because my costs are low! Investigate "return on investment" - how many customers do you NEED to justify my fee? My work will stay relevant on the net for years to come. The quick definition of "search engine marketing" is anything that gets your web site listed higher on the popular search engines, such as Google or Yahoo.
Since most search engines are financially driven, Pay Per Click (where, if someone clicks on your ad, it costs your money) will always get priority placement on the search page. It could be the first three listings based on search words. Or it could be an advert on the side of the page.
There is nothing "wrong" with using PPC. As long as you are willing to pay, you will get noticed. And the theory is "genuine interest" because a person has proactively clicked on your link, based on searching the net.
But there are two inherent flaws: The first is that it costs you money per click. They may not buy from your web site once they get there - but it costs you money each time - to get them to your web site. The second flaw is: What happens when you STOP paying per click? When your advert leaves, so does your top presence in the search engine.
The second type of marketing is more generic. It is labour intensive and time consuming. Typically, it takes months rather than days. The purpose is to get noticed by the search engines themselves. It takes the form of "rankings". The more times your name is out there, the more times you are noticed, the more positive reviews you receive, the higher your ranking. Search Engines change their algorithms all the time. But the basic principals can keep you listed.
