This is a special “newsletter”. For the last month, I’ve been fighting JUST ONE VIRUS on EVERYONE’s computer !
The “FBI Virus.” Also called “Ransom” or “Moneypak.”
You will know that you have it when you get it !
As you boot up your computer, instead of that friendly desktop, you get this stern warning from “the FBI” that your computer is infected. If you have a web cam, your picture shows up too! (as if the virus wasn’t scary enough).
They ask for money – that’s the definition of a virus – asking for money.
They ask for 200$ (not $200. That is just lame. The FBI would never make this mistake in notation)
And they tell you to get a ‘voucher’ from Wal-Mart, CVS, Walgreens etc. (go, ask, ask them how many times a DAY someone asks to buy these vouchers!)
Since your anti-virus program does not catch this error. Not Norton, Mcafee, AVG or any other.
You are pretty much stuck.
The good news (?) is that your files are safe. Your data is safe. Your emails are safe. You have not lost anything from your computer. And don’t worry… this is not the real FBI, nothing has been sent off on the internet [disclaimer: “at the time of this writing, there is no proof that anything was sent off ]

2nd disclaimer: The virus can be fixed in 1 or 2 hours. HOWEVER, there have been two cases where Microsoft services have been changed, thus forcing more work, and possible backup and reinstalls.
